Are God and the Demigods Equal?

Previous to roughly 200-250 years ago, the vast majority of followers of authentic Sanatana Dharma understood that God and the lessor gods were not interchangeable, equal, or simply different names for the same person. With the arriving of modernity, however, the legitimate Vedic understanding of the relationship of the gods to God became extremely muddled to the point where we find ourselves today. Today, most neo-Hindus and New Age zealots believe that all the gods are exactly the same being, and are equal to the Supreme Godhead. In this groundbreaking talk, Sri Dharma Pravartaka Acharya examines Lord Krishna’s direct teachings in the Bhagavad Gita on this topic in which He boldly proclaims all the lessor gods and goddesses to be sustained by Him alone.

“Those whose minds are distorted by material desires surrender unto demigods and follow the particular rules and regulations of worship according to their own natures.” (Bhagavad Gita, 7.20)

“Endowed with such a faith, he seeks favors of a particular demigod and obtains his desires. But in actuality these benefits are bestowed by Me alone.” (Bhagavad Gita, 7.22)

“Men of small intelligence worship the demigods, and their fruits are limited and temporary. Those who worship the demigods go to the planets of the demigods, but My devotees ultimately reach My supreme planet.” (Bhagavad Gita, 7.23)

“Those who know Me as the Supreme Lord, as the governing principle of the material manifestation, who know Me as the one underlying all the demigods and as the one sustaining all sacrifices, can, with steadfast mind, understand and know Me even at the time of death.” (Bhagavad Gita, 7.30)

“Whatever a man may sacrifice to other gods, O son of Kunti, is really meant for Me alone, but it is offered without true understanding.” (Bhagavad Gita, 9.23)

“Those who worship the demigods will take birth among the demigods; those who worship ghosts and spirits will take birth among such beings; those who worship ancestors go to the ancestors; and those who worship Me will live with Me.” (Bhagavad Gita, 9.25)

“Neither the hosts of demigods nor the great sages know My origin, for, in every respect, I am the source of the demigods and the sages.” (Bhagavad Gita, 10.2)

“Men in the mode of goodness worship the demigods; those in the mode of passion worship the demons; and those in the mode of ignorance worship ghosts and spirits.” (Bhagavad Gita, 17.4)
