HOW THE WEB IS CHANGING

The internet is changing. And we need to rethink how we conceive of web presence. This video lays out some practical concepts to help you devise your digital strategy for 2023 and beyond. It outlines some tools and mindsets that should be useful to professionals, creators, entrepreneurs, SMEs, brands, bands, non-profits, co-ops, or any kind of enterprise or organization that’s supposed to have a website and social media presence.

This is the future of the internet with zero mention of the metaverse, blockchain, seo, ar/vr, mixed reality, or chatgpt. Instead we’re focused on some of the obvious (once you attend to them) but underemphasized aspects of how the web is changing. Like cozy webs, digital gardens, and draft positivity.

In this video, we map the new landscape of the internet. We talk about the importance of platforms like Discord for congregating. Are.na and Notion for drawing connections among people and ideas. And tools like Miro and Figma for working in public. We describe some of the anxieties associated with being perceived online. And we suggest some draft-positive approaches to cultivating a healthy web presence.

Shoutouts to all the people and organizations referenced, and especially to the prior work of Maggie Appleton, Venkatash Rao, Yancey Strickler, Robin Sloan, and others for their excellent thinking on clear web dark forests, cozy webs, digital gardens, the visual revolution in knowledge work, and working with the garage door up.
