India’s Two Wheel EV Revolution

Over 70% of vehicles in India are two wheelers like scooters and motorcycles. Three wheel tuk, tuks make up about 10%. All together, these categories compose 92% of EVs in India in 2022.
Electric two wheel vehicles increased from 1% in 2021 to 4% in 2022. If you think that is amazing, consider that 40% of three wheel tuk tuks in 2022 were electric. Before the end of the decade, that figure is expected to increase to 95%. However, a lot of the tuk tuk EV adoption has to do with old fashioned lead-acid batteries and informal manufacturing.
India incentivizes people to purchase electric vehicles both on the national and state level.
Challenges remain for the adoption of electric vehicles in India. EVs are expensive despite generous incentives. There is not enough infrastructure for charging them which causes anxiety.
Over 85% of crude oil in India is imported. Petrol composes 24% of India’s imports. The coal that powers India’s electric power plants is mostly produced domestically. Adopting EVs will help India reduce crude oil imports and foreign energy dependence. This will reduce overall emissions and have major health benefits.
