This horrific practice was started by Portuguese neurologist António Egas Moniz but later popularized by American physician Walter Jackson Freeman II.

He allegedly lobotomized over 3500 people by driving an ice pick through the orbital region of the skull directly into the brain.

Although it got banned in 1968, decades later we’re wondering who approved it in the first place…
