Government Report Finds No Safe Level of Fluoride in Water

Fluoride has been incorporated into our community drinking water since the 1940's. Recent research that has brought doubt into the effectiveness of community water fluoridation.

The first study published by The Mount Saini Hospital determines that fluoride may diminish kidney and liver function in adolescents.

The second study, which is perhaps even more concerning was published in the Journal of American Medical Association Pediatrics (JAMA)

In this prospective birth cohort study, fluoride exposure during pregnancy was associated with lower IQ scores in children aged 3 to 4 years.

These findings indicate the possible need to reduce fluoride intake during pregnancy.

Furthermore, Dr. Joseph Nemeth points out that about 4 years ago, the recommendation for the amount of fluoride in the water was lowered from 0.7-1.2 (mg/L) to no more than 0.7 (mg/L).
This could be due to a increase in the cases of Fluorosis or staining of the teeth.

What's even more interesting is even though water fluoridation has lowered the tooth decay rate significantly in the U.S.,
it hasn't lowered it any more than in other countries who DO NOT put fluoride in water.
Foreign nations get their fluoride from dental products or supplements, which United States citizens do as well, in addition to ingesting fluoride in the water supply.

These two studies are very significant because this brings into question the effectiveness and necessity of putting fluoride in the community water supply.
It's going to take a lot more research in order to change any policies, and we are eager to see how these future studies impact government policy.

The U.S. began adding fluoride to some public water supplies in the 1940s, in an effort to strengthen teeth and prevent decay, and research on it has been accumulating in the subsequent decades. At high doses, fluoride can actually damage people’s teeth, according to the World Health Organization—and some research, much of it in animals, suggests it’s also tied to more serious side effects, including bone cancer and cognitive impairments. In part due to that controversy, more than 300 communities in North America have voted to end fluoridation programs over the past 20 years, according to the anti-fluoride activist group Fluoride Action Network. Today, about 66% of Americans and 39% of Canadians had access to fluoridated water.

The U.S. in 2015 lowered the recommended amount of fluoride in drinking water supplies, from up to 1.2 milligrams per liter to 0.7 milligrams per liter, mainly to cut down on potential damage to teeth. (Canada also defines 0.7 milligrams per liter as the optimal level of fluoridation.)
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention maintains that community water fluoridation is safe, and in 1999 even crowned it one of the 10 greatest public-health achievements of the 20th century.

A court order has led to the National Toxicology Program (NTP) releasing a finalized systematic review of fluoride's neurotoxicity that was blocked by government officials and concealed from the public since May 2022, according to the Fluoride Action Network. The NTP reported 52 of 55 studies found decreases in child IQ with increased fluoride.

"Our meta-analysis confirms results of previous meta-analyses and extends them by including newer, more precise studies…The data support a consistent inverse association between fluoride exposure and children's IQ."

NTP's meta-analysis puts the harm into perspective:

"[R]esearch on other neurotoxicants has shown that subtle shifts in IQ at the population level can have a profound impact…a 5-point decrease in a population's IQ would nearly double the number of people classified as intellectually disabled."
