Rally "Do it again!" for peace
On April 22, 2023, hundreds of people walked peacefully on the streets for peace, freedom, self-determination.
Torgau goes down in history. In April 1945, US soldiers and Red Army soldiers shake hands on the rubble of the Torgau Elbe Bridge.
"We promised one another that the nations of the earth should and must live in peace," said Joseph "Joe" Polowsky. As the son of Jewish emigrants from the Ukraine, he spoke Russian and served as an interpreter for the patrol. The famous "oath" sprang from an impulse of the moment. “We were soldiers, not diplomats. And we didn't put together a written text. The encounter took place in combat conditions,” recalled Russian corporal Alexander Olshansky . “The souvenir exchange meant that we no longer had any buttons with a star on our shirts. We exchanged watches, emblems and badges,” said Leonid Volodarsky , who was also there.
