Socrates, an ancient Greek philosopher whose way of life, character, and thought had a significant impact on Western philosophy, was born in Athens, Greece, around 470 BCE and died there in 399 BCE.

He is best known for his affiliation with the Socratic technique of question and response, his admission of ignorance (or awareness of his own ignorance), and his assertion that an unquestioned life is not something that humans should put their lives on the line for.

While Socrates frequently admitted his ignorance of the many (primarily ethical) topics he investigated (such as the nature of piety), he did hold certain convictions with confidence, including that: (1) human wisdom begins with the recognition of one's own ignorance; (2) the unexamined life is not worthwhile; (3) ethical virtue is the only thing that matters; and (4) a good person can never be harmed because whatever misfortune he may suffer, his goodness will outweigh it.
