Zakynthos

Zakynthos is a Greek island in the Ionian Sea. It is the third largest of the Ionian Islands and has an area of 405.55 km2 and a coastline of about 123 km. The name, like all similar names ending in -nthos, is pre-Mycenaean or Pelasgian in origin. According to Greek mythology, the island was named after Zakynthos, the son of the legendary Arcadian leader Dardanus.

Zakynthos is a popular tourist destination, with an international airport served by charter flights from northern Europe. The island's nickname is "the Flower of the Levant", given to it by the Venetians who were in possession of Zakynthos from 1484 to 1797.
Zakynthos offers white beaches, sea turtles and parties all day long. Some of the most famous beaches are Shipwreck Beach, Laganas, Gerakas, Vasilikos and Marathonisi. The island also hosts the first marine park in Greece, where the rare loggerhead sea turtles lay their eggs.
Zakynthos also has a rich history and culture. The city of Zakynthos has a beautiful Venetian architecture and houses the relics of Saint Dionysius, the patron saint of the island. Bohali is a picturesque neighborhood that offers a panoramic view of the harbor and the Venetian castle.
