Lord Nigel Lawson, former Chancellor under the Thatcher government, passed away on 3rd April 2023. Regardless of that administration's achievements during the 1980's, Lawson is generally considered to have been an effective Chancellor and a shrewd economist.
In this Parliamentary Committee report by the BBC from 2012, he casually states that overall immigration to the UK has brought little or no benefits whatever.
He argues that what matters is what immigration is doing to individual prosperity in the country, and not what is simply increasing the country's economy.
"There is no economic benefit at all, and this is well established. Immigration to this country has damaged the prospects of many young British workers, and its benefits are largely non-existent."
Quite a statement for a reputable former Conservative minister.
