Justice for Joshua Rohrer: Calling for SBI to Investigate the Gastonia PD - 9/21/22

The story so far: Joshua Rohrer, a homeless veteran, was confronted by the Gastonia PD in October of 2021 and accused of panhandling while standing at the side of the road, waving at passing vehicles. During this confrontation, Mr. Rohrer’s PTSD service dog was tased by the GPD, separated from Mr. Rohrer (a federal offence under ADA law), and given into the care of strangers while Mr. Rohrer was under arrest rather than securing the animal under the care of animal control. While Sunshine was separated from her charge, she escaped, was struck by a car, and killed. The GPD adamantly refused to release the body cam footage of the incident for months before finally complying with repeated inquiries and a petition filed by Mr. Rohrer’s legal counsel. Since the incident, all charges against Mr. Rohrer have been dropped, but no further investigation of the officers involved has occurred, even though they were clearly lying to their superior about what had occurred while on camera. This comes as no surprise since one of the officers involved is the son of the head of the GPD Internal Affairs Agency. Where we are now: The next step is a repeated call to involve the State Bureau of Investigations to examine this incident and the repeated pattern of abuse against the homeless of Gastonia. To continue to call attention to the lack of response from the GPD and the Gastonia City Council, and to a call attention to the harassment of private citizens by members of the GPD on social media, and the blocking of Gastonia residents from commenting on the City and Mayor’s social media pages in flagrant disregard of laws preventing such actions.
