There are 14 species of gazelles in Africa and Southwest Asia. They’re social animals that live in dry deserts, grasslands, and savannas, eating mostly scrubs and leaves. The beautiful gazelle has long legs, slender bodies, and distinctive curved horns that are found on both males and females. They are known for their ability to jump and leap long distances. The well-built gazelle can react and change directions quickly. They’re very fast and have stamina to outrun most of their opponents. The alert gazelle has excellent eyesight, hearing, and smell. When they do smell an unfamiliar scent, they lift their head and bolt. They can run and bound up to 50mph, never looking back. The adaptable gazelle responds to danger unpredictably, usually in a zigzag way that’s almost impossible to follow. The female gives birth once a year and the calves are able walk soon afterwards. The mother and new calf rejoins the herd after a couple of weeks. Young gazelles depend on the mother’s milk during the first 5 months of life.
