Scottsdale police release bodycam footage showing fatal police shooting of an armed suspect

The Scottsdale Police Department released a critical incident briefing on Thursday that came with snippets of body-camera footage depicting a fatal police shooting that occurred Sunday evening.Show more

Officer Aaron Bolin, a department spokesman, narrates the video and says officers responded to the area of Granite Reef Road and Cypress Street at around 6:50 p.m. to calls about a domestic disturbance involving 26-year-old Isaiah Curtis. Bolin said Curtis' ex-girlfriend had driven him to stay at a house in the area.

Bolin said the ex-girlfriend called 911 because Curtis refused to leave her vehicle while armed with a gun. Officers driving in the same vehicle arrived to the scene within minutes with guns drawn as the 911 operator informed them about Curtis being armed.

Body-camera footage shows an officer in the front-passenger seat of a patrol car exit the vehicle while holding a rifle, while another officer holding a handgun walks ahead of him. The officers approach a black sedan parked in a driveway and order Curtis, who is standing by the vehicle, to put his hands up. Shortly thereafter, Curtis can be seen firing at least once at the officers before the officers return fire.

Curtis can be seen falling to the ground shortly after officers fire at him several times. Bolin said officers performed multiple life-saving measures, including applying chest seals, tourniquets and CPR, but he ultimately died at the scene.

Bolin said the officers who shot Curtis, and who were not identified, have been placed on leave as the internal and criminal investigations proceed, as is standard protocol. The officers involved had been with the department for 1.5 years and 3 years respectively and were assigned to the patrol division.
