Sudan is located south of Egypt. It is one of the poorest countries in the world. It has a predominantly Muslim population of 46 million people living on about $750 a year.
In 2019 there was a military coup in which the civilians, military, and the paramilitary all teamed up to overthrow the ruler, President Bashir. The paramilitary group is called the Rapid Support Forces. The RSF had been used by the president to basically carry out genocide and ethnic cleansing in Darfur. Fast forward to 2021, the military and paramilitary groups decide the country is moving towards democracy too fast, so they overthrow the transitional council that was moving Sunday toward civilian rule.
Next, the military and paramilitary become suspicious of one another. The military teams up with Egypt and the RSF, the paramilitary group, teams up with Saudi Arabia. Also, RSF has linked to Russia’s Wagner mercenary group, but also, there may have been links to Wagner with the military as well. Violence breaks out in the capital and other large cities.
