Spike Returns to Gastonia, NC - Justice Still Denied for Joshua Rohrer and Sunshine Rae

Since the last time Spike and many others spoke before the Gastonia, NC City Council, nothing has changed. Worse than nothing, in fact. Joshua's court date has been pushed back, the body cam footage is still not released, and Pastor Moses's homeless shelter continues to be forcibly closed. In the past two weeks, 15 homeless people have died in Gastonia. It's not provable that the two are connected in any way, but this rash of deaths since his ministry to the least among us was denied speaks to how much his compassion made a difference. With his shelter shut down, there is no place for the homeless to go in Gastonia. This time, the City Council was prepared to fight dirty. The chamber was filled with staff, the public comment list was filled up, and those who wished to speak on behalf of Josh were forced to stand outside in the rain. It was only with the threat of media attention that he and others were allowed to speak. We tried to appeal to their sense of fairness and accountability, and we were ignored. Now, we bring the threat of media attention, not only to this issue but to the history of abuse Gastonia's police have inflicted on the homeless through the use of the Eagle team. The City Council and the police department are eroding the trust placed in them by the residents of Gastonia, it is time to bring accountability not only in this issue, but all of the abuses that are being committed in the name of law and order.
