Fecal Egg Count for Our Goat Herd (NOT What We Expected!) @SageandStoneHomestead

We ran a fecal egg count on our dairy goats to check for worms. Knowing which worms are present in an animal allow you to properly develop a plan to treat them rather than applying a blanket solution that may or may not actually fix the problem.

Every goat has worms – it’s just a part of the deal. However, worm loads should be carefully monitored because too much can be extremely harmful to their health. While it may seem beneficial to give dewormer on a routine basis doing so can actually cultivate a strain of medicine-resistant parasites, meaning that when things go bad, they get REAL bad.

We have a few goats that we’ve been struggling to keep weight on. They get the same feed intake as everyone else and yet they’re just a little on the thin side. Our friend Heather at Sage and Stone Homestead has her own microscope and offered to give us a hand running fecals on our goat herd. Let’s have a “Poop Party!”

Thanks to Heather’s help we now know that we have a good, healthy herd of goats and worming them is not necessary. We also know which of our does should be treated for liver fluke and have a good plan of action to treat that. It’s great to have good friends who want to help out, and that includes you.
