The story of the thief on the cross is a brief account found in the Gospel of Luke, chapter 23, verses 39-43. It tells of two criminals who were crucified alongside Jesus, one on his right and the other on his left.

One of the criminals began to mock and taunt Jesus, but the other thief rebuked him and acknowledged that they were being punished justly for their crimes, but Jesus had done nothing wrong. He then turned to Jesus and said, "Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom."

Jesus responded to the thief, saying, "Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise." This exchange between Jesus and the thief has come to be known as a demonstration of Jesus' mercy and forgiveness, even to the most undeserving of sinners.
