Dear Pastor Bob: I have been an addict most of my life. I used to take drugs when I was younger, and even though I quit taking drugs many years ago, I did continue to drink alcohol. I am clean and sober now. I had my last drink in July of last year. But one addiction remains: nicotine. Realizing I needed to quit this as well, I put down the cigarettes several weeks ago. After a couple weeks, I noticed extreme cravings for alcohol like I have not experienced in a very long time. I do not want to go back to drinking, so I bought more cigarettes to make the alcohol cravings go away. Paul (in the Bible) said, "I will not be mastered by anything," but I am mastered by drugs in various forms. I know that this is a sin, but I have been telling myself that it is better to have a cigarette than to drink alcohol to justify it. But if I am honest about it, I am just a hopeless addict and feel weak and defeated. What advice or encouragement can you give?
