It’s Casual Friday! Emma hosts Alex Pareene, Contributing Editor at the New Republic and proprietor of the AP newsletter on Substack, to round up a CRAZY week in news.

Alex Pareene then joins as he and Emma walk through Donald Trump’s ongoing case in New York, the charges he’s facing, the impact it will (or won’t) have on the 2024 election, and why it reinforces his desire to regain the presidency. They also tackle this week’s results in Wisconsin’s special elections, and Scott Walker perfectly represents the GOP’s open warfare on the priorities and rights of young people, before they wrap up the interview by assessing Brandon Johnson’s victory in Chicago and what urban progressives can learn from it.

The one and only Alex Perine of the good AP sub-stack newsletter. And contributing Editor to the new Republic. A dear friend of the show. Alex thanks so much for coming on. Of course Emma. Hello. Hello. Big news week. Pretty damn big. Yeah. Oh yeah. I was gonna make some really terrible joke there but I'm just drawing a blank. So yeah what's been going on Anything anything big? Yeah I mean there are some images of you know Trump. Trump was arraigned in the courtroom. Like what do you make of that? I know that in terms of actual electoral consequences that we'll talk about today, it's probably the least important oddly enough. Trump is the first former president to face criminal charges on this front. Because we're also going to talk about the Wisconsin Supreme Court with him which is massive. What's happened in Chicago? Like I don't even know what this does in terms of moving the needle for the Republican voter. My guess is it does nothing except be neutral or help him. But putting the horse race stuff aside, what was your immediate response to the 34 felony accountants being brought against Trump? To be totally honest, my immediate response was I'm so glad I'm not in Manhattan today. Like oh my god, the traffic would have been insane downtown. I'm just glad I'm not downtown. But I'm glad I don't have to cover this somehow. The people who like to show up just to sort of be interviewed are our lunatics. But I don't know because you can take it as this world-historic thing you know the indictment of a former president. An unprecedented you know a bit like a piece of American History. And then like, on the other hand, it's all kind of regular right? Because we're just talking about it like it's a lot of you know a lot of counts there. But I think despite what some people have, they have sort of argued like he's going up for the sorts of things that people have been tried for in the past. right like people where John Edwards was investigated for this stuff you know? And there's also something pretty normal for a person who has committed a whole bunch of campaign finance violations. You know, not as normal as it used to be. But it's like yeah sometimes they get charged you know?
