In a world of rapidly evolving technology, criminals are finding innovative ways to steal vehicles by exploiting their computer systems. Thieves are now targeting the headlight modules in modern cars, which have a direct connection to the Controller Area Network (CAN) bus system—the vehicle's central nervous system. By accessing the CAN bus system, criminals can infiltrate the vehicle's communication network and take control, bypassing the security provided by smart keys.

Ken Tindell, the chief technical officer of Canis Automotive Labs, explained that although most vehicles today do not have protected internal messages, there are defenses against this method. The most effective deterrent is the time required for thieves to access the wiring, as they need a secluded area to work undisturbed. While Tindell notes that vehicle manufacturers can eventually address this security issue, finding a solution may take some time due to the complexities and extensive testing involved.
