The Kermode, or Kermode bear, is a subspecies of the American black bear (baribal) that lives exclusively in the forests of the west coast of Canada.
Approximately 10% of the Kermode bear population is white or cream colored.
The appearance of bears with white hair is associated with the presence of a recessive allele of the color gene. These bears are not albinos. They are also not related to polar bears. The Kermode bear was named after Francis Kermode, who first described it. The local tribes of the Indians have a different name for the bear - the ghost bear
