What was wrong with building the tower of Babel to meet God?

I'm sure you're all familiar with the story of the Tower of Babel. We only have thousands of languages because some people thought long ago that they could actually build a tower that would reach heaven.

However, why did God go out of his way to stop the project? Why didn't he just let it fail?

Maybe the tower was more than just a silly project...
