Saint Julie Billiart, also known as St. Julie Billiart, was born on July 12, 1751, in Cuvilly, Picardy, France. She was the sixth of seven children in a farming family. From a young age, Julie showed a deep devotion to her Catholic faith and a keen interest in prayer and spirituality.

However, her early life was marked by challenges. At the age of 14, Julie suffered a severe illness that left her paralyzed and bedridden for 22 years. Despite her physical limitations, she remained steadfast in her faith and used her time in prayer to deepen her relationship with God.

During her long illness, Julie became known for her holiness and for the spiritual counsel she offered to others. She also developed a deep desire to devote her life to serving God and helping others grow in their faith.

In 1804, Julie and a friend, Françoise Blin de Bourdon, founded the Institute of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur, with the mission of educating young girls, especially those from poor families. Their first school was established in Amiens, France, with a focus on providing education rooted in Christian values and promoting the empowerment of women through knowledge and faith.

Despite facing opposition and persecution during the political upheavals of the French Revolution, Julie remained dedicated to her mission of education and service. She was known for her courage, resilience, and unwavering trust in God's providence.

Julie Billiart died on April 8, 1816, at the age of 64. She was canonized as a saint by Pope Pius XII on June 22, 1969, in recognition of her exemplary life of holiness and her contributions to education and the advancement of women. Today, St. Julie Billiart is revered as the patron saint of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur and of those who suffer from physical illness or disability. Her feast day is celebrated on April 8th each year.
