Snow is melting, weather is warming, and we enter our work season. Lets walk around and chat and discuss what it's like having a cold hardy permaculture food forest.

March walkaround:
- Asseessing final rabbit and deer damage for 2021 season.
- Teasing my big project for 2021.
- Discussion on pruning
- Propagating
- And Ginny chasing rabbits

People ask all the time how I get everything done with all this "landscaping". Isn't that a lot of work?

Well, permaculture is different. For example, how much human work is needed in a forest to keep it going? Zero. So, although we CAN do a lot of work to keep everything going where we want it going, that's not part of nature's plan. Anything we DO do, (haha he said doodoo), it's because it's work we WANT to do.

A common question I get is what the workload is for a food forest. The answer is really "whatever you want it to be". For me, it's a fairly decent few days pruning trees. I like to do it in piecemeal, as I take the dogs out. It makes it less of a chore. This pruning wood is also a resource-gift (biochar, mulch, scion wood for grafting, etc). I have been doing pruning here and there the last week or so, and I'm almost done. It hasn't been a chore at all.

Now that all this work is done, my work for the year is effectively over. I can weed here and there, sure. I have to pick food as I enjoy my land (is that work?). Sure. I have to can and store my excess and spend time in the kitchen with my family (again, is that work?).

I choose to do more. As the ground starts thawing over the next month, I'm going to modify earthworks here and there, expand, etc. I don't need to do any of that, but this permaculture journey to me is a lifelong one, where I spend every year expanding my influence further and further.

Take advantage of this warm/cool weather. You will want it back in the summer when you have stuff to do (that you didn't do in March/April) but it's too darn hot out.

This is our work season, and this is where we can make massive change. If we want.
