Lao-Tzu (l. c. 500 BCE, also known as Laozi or Lao-Tze) was a Chinese philosopher credited with founding the philosophical system of Taoism.

The 6th century BCE Taoism emphasized the value of non-action, non-resistance, and "going with the flow" in order to live a high-minded and transformative life. The important Taoist principles are inaction, simplicity and living in harmony with nature.

Four passages in the Yellow Emperor sections, where Laozi is the major character, are discussions that directly criticize Confucius and the Confucian characteristics of ren, yi, and li. Laozi's views in these sections are similar to those made in the Daodejing and are most likely from the time when that collection was taking on its most complete form. The support of wu-wei, opposition to discursive reasoning and mind-meddling, criticism of establishing distinctions, and veneration of forgetfulness and mental fasting are a few of these themes. Han Feizi and the Huainanzi include the first claims that Laozi wrote the Daodejing. Laozi, who through time rose to prominence in institutionalized Daoism, was frequently linked to the various incarnations and transformations of the dao itself.
