Jeffrey A. Tucker, the founder and president of Brownstone Institute, testified to the National Citizens Inquiry on COVID-19, claiming that mainstream media has a uniformity of opinion, which forces people to turn to other platforms for a wider view. According to Tucker, the internet replaced print media over the last 25 years, and the industry became entirely reorganized so that even local media was dependent on centralized media sources, leaving them with little independence. Tucker claimed that citizen journalism on platforms like Substack and Twitter is the only place where independent news happens. He stated that controlling the news has become crucial to corrupt bureaucracies and governments, especially during the pandemic years. Tucker also criticized media for self-censorship, not drawing any connection to lockdowns and public health responses. Tucker further suggested that people should unplug national security from its controls over big media venues, but he doubts the antitrust authorities in any country are interested in breaking up big media because it serves their interests.
