Shakira and Karol G have joined forces for an empowering new song – here’s the meaning of TQG and the song’s lyrics explained.
The two Colombian superstars have finally released a joint single as fans of both musicians have been waiting for a collaboration like this for many years. Shakira and Karol G’s new single premiered on YouTube and other streaming platforms in the early hours of Friday morning, February 24, 2023.
But what is the meaning of TQG? Let’s find out…
TQG means ‘te quedó grande’, which translated to English means ‘too big for you’.
In the song, Karol G mentions the phrase La Bichota, which means a bad girl in Spanish slang, as she sings: “Se te olvidó que estoy en otra/Y que te quedó grande La Bichota.”
This is translated to: “You forgot that I’m in another And that La Bichota was too big for you.”
At the end of the single, the phrase TQG emerges again and Karol G sings: “My love, it’s that you moved away a lot/And I no longer see from afar, baby/ TQM but TQG.”
The music video dropped on Karol G‘s YouTube channel and has already surpassed 8 million views since its premiere.
Throughout the whole song, both Shakira and Karol G appear to deliver messages to their former partners, even though they don’t directly mention their names.
The powerful track is very much about feeling self-confident after a tough breakup and both artists are clearly unapologetic about the song’s lyrics. In one of the verses, Shakira sings: “You left, and I got triple “m”: much hotter, much tougher, much lighter.”
Elsewhere in the song, she continues: “What we lived I forgot. And that is what has offended you. And life has got even better for me. You are no longer welcome here.
“I saw what your girlfriend threw at me. That doesn’t even make me angry, I laugh, I laugh.”
Shakira and her ex Pique, who has been dating Clara Chia, separated in June 2022 after 11 years together. Karol G was previously in a relationship with Puerto Rican rapper Anuel AA.
In a new interview, Karol G revealed that she had wanted to work with Shakira for a long time and the new single has proved to be a perfect opportunity for collaboration.
“When I started it, it had a personal meaning to me that evolved over time and though it doesn’t represent things now, it was a particular moment in my life,” the singer told Rolling Stone.
It was when Karol G heard Shakira’s single Monotonía with Ozuna that she realized the Hips Don’t Lie artist’s personal story would fit into the track.
“Listening to that story and where she was at, ‘the song TQG made a lot of sense,” Karol G explained. “I sent it to her and she loved it.” The new single is part of Karol G’s fourth studio album Mañana Será Bonito, which also dropped on February 24.
