Plato, (born 428/427 BCE, Athens, Greece—died 348/347, Athens), ancient Greek philosopher, student of Socrates (c. 470–399 BCE), teacher of Aristotle (384–322 BCE), and founder of the Academy, best known as the author of philosophical works of unparalleled influence.

The young Plato later became an ardent student of Socrates; in fact, he was one of the young people Socrates was accused of corrupting. The foundation for Plato's early dialogues stemmed from his memories of Socrates' philosophy, which he lived out, and his approach of constant inquiry. For the older philosopher, who left no written works of his own, Plato's dialogues and "Apologia," his written account of Socrates' trial, are said to provide the most realistic portrait now accessible.

Plato's most famous work is the Republic, which details a wise society run by a philosopher. He is also famous for his dialogues (early, middle, and late), which showcase his metaphysical theory of forms—something else he is well known for.

Plato, like the majority of other ancient philosophers, promotes a virtue-based, eudaemonistic view of ethics. Eudaimonia, or happiness or well-being, is the ultimate goal of moral thought and behavior, and the virtues (aretê: "excellence") are the necessary abilities and attitudes to achieve it.

His most famous contribution is the theory of Forms known by pure reason, in which Plato presents a solution to the problem of universals, known as Platonism (also ambiguously called either Platonic realism or Platonic idealism).

According to Plato, the desire to understand and consider beauty in its purest form is fueled by love. This occurs through time, starting with a progressive appreciation of the outward manifestation of physical beauty and progressing to a gradual appreciation of spiritual beauty.
