North Korea has claimed it has successfully test-fired a solid-fuel intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), potentially advancing its goal of acquiring a more powerful and difficult-to-detect weapon capable of reaching the United States. The official Korean Central News Agency reported the launch on Frida, which occurred a day after North Korea’s neighbors detected a long-range missile launch from near Pyongyang. While analysts suggest that the test does not demonstrate the full capacity of the missile, it represents a significant step forward for North Korea’s nuclear ambitions. Kim Jong Un supervised the launch, and described the Hwasong-18 missile as the most potent weapon in his arsenal.
