Dr David Jockers podcast

Hypertension, unless there is an
endocrine or kidney defect, then it is
very likely the cause is insulin resistance

Insulin resistance impacts hypertension
due to its negative effect on kidneys &
blood vessels
-stimulates excess aldosterone
-tells kidneys to retain salt...and water
Result: too much water in blood
-blood volume & pressure too high

Kidneys want to dump excess water...
but insulin will not let them
-if one switches to low carb eating
-in one day, systolic blood pressure
can go down 20 points
Insulin resistance won't allow blood
vessel to dilate
-NORMALLY, insulin binds endothelial
cells lining vessel to produce nitric oxide
-makes vessel's smooth muscle relax
-dilates blood vessel; drops pressure

If endothelial cells are insulin resistant...
-insulin CANNOT induce this
vasodilation
-they STAY CONSTRICTED
blood pressure rises
Dr David Jockers
"Typically, when high blood pressure,
patient told to go 'low salt'
It is NOT A SALT ISSUE...
It is an INSULIN ISSUE"
-often, on low carb...need more salt!!
