This story is about Merrin, who lived in the suburbs and rarely had kids his age around to play with. When Van moved in across the street, they became fast friends. Van was homeschooled and had to spend an hour with his grandmother every morning and evening, but Merrin did not know what they did in there until Van snuck him in during one of his visits. Van sat in a chair next to his sleeping grandmother and read from a brown spiral-bound notebook. They avoided discussing it for several years until they were 15, and Van brought it up after Merrin invited him on a camping trip, but he could not go because of the family ritual. Merrin felt guilty for leaving Van behind and wanted to talk to him about it when they got back.
