Dajian Huineng was born on February 27, 638, and died on August 28, 713. He is also known as the Sixth Patriarch or Sixth Ancestor of Chan. He is a mythical but essential figure in the early history of Chinese Chan Buddhism.
Tradition says he was an uneducated layman who suddenly became enlightened after knowing the Diamond Sutra. Despite his lack of formal education, he demonstrated his wisdom to the fifth patriarch, Daman Hongren, who allegedly chose Huineng as his genuine heir rather than Yuquan Shenguiu, as he was widely known.
Scholars in the 20th century found that the story of Huineng's Buddhist career was probably made up by the monk Heze Shenhui, who said he was one of Huineng's disciples and was very critical of Shenxiu's teaching.
Huineng founded the "Sudden Enlightenment" Southern Chan Buddhist school, emphasizing the immediate and direct achievement of Buddhist enlightenment. The Platform Sutra of the Sixth Patriarch, which is said to be a record of his teachings, is a fundamental text in the East Asian Buddhist tradition.
Huineng's talks on inherent enlightenment, sudden awakening, and the non-dual nature of wisdom and meditation have echoed through later generations of Chan teachers and continue to present difficult philosophical challenges.
With that in mind, we've compiled a list of some of Dajian Huineng's best quotes. These quotes are to awaken and enlighten you and will stay with you for a long time.
▶️Here are some of the best Huineng Quotes:

• Within our impure mind the pure is to be found.
• By amending our mistakes, we get wisdom. By defending our faults, we betray an unsound mind.
• To be bigoted and argue with others, is to subject one's essence of mind to the bitterness of mundane existence.
• The meaning of life is to see.
• A finger points at the moon, but the moon is not at the tip of the finger. Words point at the truth, but the truth is not in words.
