The Pros and Cons of Using Psychedelics to Treat Addiction

Jack Levine, who is involved with the Louisiana Addiction Research Center, is aware that psychedelics are being studied as a treatment for addiction, but he notes that it is still new research. He believes that if it works, it would be wonderful, but there are some concerns about it being an ongoing treatment or replacing one drug with another. He acknowledges the individual nature of addiction treatment and believes that total sobriety is the answer, but medically assisted treatment may be necessary for some. Levine emphasizes the importance of treating addiction as a disease and urges individuals struggling with addiction to seek help, regardless of how they got there, and reminds them that there are seven ways out of addiction. The four themes that emerged from his book, Addiction Recovery Handbook, are that addiction is a terrible disease, there is a way out, and treating the whole person spiritually, emotionally, physically, and relationally can be helpful.
