Chemically based preservative is being added to fresh foods

WEF and Gates endorsed plant-based preservative coating for fruit and vegetables developed by James Rogers. Apeel was launched with a Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation grant of $985,161, and attracted big-name investors and even celebrities Oprah Winfrey and Katy Perry. The biggest supermarkets across the U.S. and Europe are now home to Apeel-coated fresh produce.
 
According to the WEF, "Apeel is a California-based company that is fighting the $2.6 trillion global food waste crisis by using advances in materials science to prevent waste in the first place – a sustainable approach to the world’s growing and urgent food demands that will transform the world’s food supply chain by eliminating the need for the cold chain. The company’s breakthrough technology doubles the lifespan of harvested fruits and vegetables without refrigeration, which dramatically reduces food waste, preserves natural resources, and helps the global food system operate more harmoniously with nature. Apeel was founded in 2012."

Apeel is made of monoglycerides and diglycerides; emulsifiers that they stop water and oil from separating. These substances are known to cause inflammation.

"The FDA classifies monoglycerides as ‘generally recognized as safe’ or GRAS, as food additives and ingredients, meaning that they do not pose an immediate health risk.
Currently, food producers mostly use monoglycerides and diglycerides in small amounts, so it is hard to say how eating large amounts of these types of fat will impact human health."
