The British monarchy's involvement with the slave trade in the 17th and 18th centuries is being investigated, according to a statement from Buckingham Palace.

King Charles III "takes the matter profoundly seriously," according to the palace.

The Royal Archives and the Royal Collection are being made completely accessible to researchers from the University of Manchester in the UK by Buckingham Palace.

The research, which is historian Camilla de Koning's PhD project, is anticipated to be finished in 2026.
