Why were the soldiers bribed by the elders who had Jesus murdered?

Throughout history, many people have developed explanations for how Jesus' body disappeared after three days in a tomb, but the only one the Bible discusses is the stolen body hypothesis: when nobody was watching, the disciples stole his body and told everyone that Jesus was resurrected. The Pharisees paid the guards of the tomb to spread this rumour, and as Matthew 28:15 shows, their scheme worked.
