Pet owners across the US are being warned about the dangers of Sportmix pet food. The FDA has issued a recall notice for several varieties of Sportmix pet food, which have been found to contain high levels of a deadly toxin called aflatoxin. At least 28 dogs have died, and eight others have become severely ill due to the contamination.

Aflatoxin is a toxin generated by the Aspergillus flavus mold, which can grow on corn and other grains used in making pet foods. If consumed regularly, the toxin can accumulate in pets' bodies, increasing the risk of poisoning. Pet owners who have been feeding their pets any of the affected Sportmix dog food products are urged to contact a veterinarian as soon as possible if their pet exhibits symptoms of aflatoxin poisoning.

The recall notice affects several varieties of pet food produced by Midwestern Pet Food, including Sportmix Energy Plus, Premium High Energy, and Original Cat lines. The list of affected products may expand as the FDA and the Missouri Department of Agriculture continue their investigation into the matter. Pet owners are encouraged to remain vigilant about the food they provide to their pets and to stay informed about potential dangers associated with certain brands and products.
