Biniginit has become the soul food that most Filipinos crave during the Lenten Season. With this dish, some may recall childhood memories for its sweet stew everyone’s mom or lola used to make when they were younger.

The reason why Filipinos traditionally prepare binignit during the Lent is because the ingredients don’t contain any meat. During the Lent, Christians are encouraged to fast and abstain from eating meat. Therefore, the binignit, a meat-less sweet dish good for the sunny weather, became the perfect stew during the hot days of the Lenten Season.

There are two ways to serve binignit: hot or cold. It gives off warm vibes when eaten hot on a rainy afternoon and it can also be served fresh and cold when the weather gets too hot in the Philippines. In short, you can eat it any way you like!
