In 1986, Treasurer of Pennsylvania R. Budd Dwyer was convicted of accepting a bribe to award a technology company a multi-million dollar government contract. He was found guilty on 11 counts of conspiracy, mail fraud, perjury, and interstate transportation in aid of racketeering, and was scheduled to be sentenced on January 23, 1987. The day before however, Dwyer called a news conference, explained his innocence, and fatally shot himself in front of everyone in attendance, and thousands more watching on TV.
