Scientists involved in the project have reportedly informed the South China Morning Post that China intends to commence construction of a lunar base in roughly five years’ time, beginning with the production of bricks fashioned from moon soil.

According to local media reports, Ding Lieyun, a prominent scientist at Huazhong University of Science and Technology, has stated that the initial brick crafted from moon soil will be produced during the Chang’e 8 mission, projected to take place around 2028, the Financial Post reported.

China has previously said its lunar base will likely be powered by nuclear energy, and will include a lander, hopper, orbiter and rover, all of which would be constructed by the Chang’e 6, 7 and 8 missions. It wasn’t immediately clear in the interview if the entire base will be built with lunar soil.
