The gap between the natural setting, for which our physiological functions are adapted, and the highly urbanized and artificial setting that we inhabit is a contributing cause of the "stress state“
A walk in nature or even looking at greenery can reduce anxiety & improve memory.
Spending time in nature reduces cortisol levels and HPA-Axis activation including respiration and BP
Visual stimulus of nature (unscented roses, live house plants), even indoors is correlated with a decrease in HPA-Axis activity
Even 3-D visual representations promoted modest levels of relaxation (but not 2-D)
Olfactory stimulus with live plants and certain essential oils
Auditory nature sounds also are associated with reduced cortisol and HPA-Axis activation
Some of the benefits are thought to be attributed to extrasensory factors such as microbes and ions
Nature Therapy has been found to be beneficial in
General medical recovery
Flowering plants and foliage in hospital rooms have attributed to enhanced recovery rates, less post-operative medications, demonstrated more positive physiological responses
Immune system improvement
Enhancement of vitamin D
Improved oxygenation
Pain reduction
Patients exposed to images of nature were much more likely to change from stronger to weaker pain medication during recovery. Patients exposed to nature images reported significantly less anxiety as well
Exposure of increased levels of sunlight for patients having undergone spinal surgery resulted in reduced pain, stress, use of painkilling medication
Mood
Viewing scenes of nature was associated with the elevated production of serotonin and stimulation of positive thinking and reduced aggression and post-stress anger.
Horticultural therapy has been shown to improve mood state reducing stress and its contribution to coronary heart disease
