The Lutheran reformation in Sweden was a direct consequence of what protestants call "The Swedish War of Liberation" (1521–23; Befrielsekriget) and what Catholics call "Gustav Vasa's Rebellion". The nobleman Gustav Vasa deposed and replaced Vatican approved King Christian II from the throne of Sweden; ending the Kalmar Union between Sweden, Norway, and Denmark. Gustav Vasa was persuaded to adopt reformation by Lutheran scholar Olaus Petri and his brother Laurentius. The process of Lutheran Reformation took place between 1527 and 1593. There was an unsuccessful attempt at Counter-Reformation between 1568 and 1592.

The Marxist explanation for the emergence of the reformation: There was an agricultural crisis in the late 1400's and early 1500's caused by drought (dry climate) and this caused a fatal breakdown in the feudal economy of Western Europe. The Catholic Church was not equipped to handle this. In context of this crisis; The German nobility allied with urban mercantile and banking elites emerged as a political factor and these became the patrons of Reformation. The reason Martin Luther was not executed by the Holy Inquisition was because he enjoyed protection from German noblemen who had their eyes on Monastic lands. The best and most productive land was reserved for monasteries and such land became very valuable in context of drought and famine.

OBS ! Gustav Vasa and the Swedish Reformers (i.e. the Petri brothers) were definitely NOT fans of Arianism. Martin Luther was very clear in his thesis that John 1:1 contradicts both Modalist Trinitarianism and Arianism.
