Florida Conservancy Group Discovers Record-Breaking Burmese Python In Everglades
Wildlife biologists from the Conservancy of Southwest Florida made an incredible discovery in the Florida Everglades - the largest female Burmese python ever captured in the state, measuring 18 feet (5.5 meters) long and weighing 215 pounds (98kg). The team found the snake carrying 122 developing eggs. Researchers have been studying the movement, breeding behaviour, and habitat use of pythons for the last 10 years, and they have been tracking the snake that led them to the huge specimen they have captured. Burmese pythons are an invasive species that pose a threat to native wildlife.
The discovery comes as a part of the ongoing efforts to tackle the invasive species, which have caused rapid reproduction and depletion of surrounding native wildlife. Governor Ron DeSantis has warned that these snakes are destroying the natural food chain, and the ecosystem will not be healthy without it. The state of Florida has spent over $3 million to remove pythons using tools and technology to detect such large snakes.
