The British Medical Association (BMA) is demanding a 35 per cent pay rise for junior doctors in England, claiming they have been subjected to a 26 per cent real-term pay cut since 2009 due to rising annual inflation. Ministers from the UK’s governing party claim the BMA’s demands are unaffordable. Around 48,000 National Health Service (NHS) staff are estimated to have joined the nationwide strike, which could lead to the cancellation of up to 35,000 appointments, including surgical operations, according to reports. Tuesday’s strike marked the second round of industrial action led by the BMA. Medical workers previously went on strike for three days from March 11 -13.
