The Shiveluch volcano on the Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia erupted, covering nearby villages in ash and blocking out the sun.

One of Russia's most active volcanoes erupted early Tuesday spewing clouds of dust more than 65,000 feet into the sky. The Shiveluch volcano in the Kamchatka Krai region began erupting just after midnight, the Russian Academy of Sciences Geophysical Survey reported.

A video shared on Twitter by the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs shows massive ash clouds rain down from the volcano. The footage showed the volcano in "full eruption mode," with the government account noting ash emissions had reached 12 miles high.
