Thiago Silva RETURNS! | Frank Lampard prepares to lead Chelsea against UCL CHAMPIONS Real Madrid

Chelsea caretaker manager Frank Lampard prepared for his return to the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday as he took charge of training ahead of Wednesday’s trip to face holders Real Madrid in the first leg of their quarter-final tie.

Lampard won Europe’s elite club competition as a player with Chelsea, captaining the team in their 2012 victory in Munich, and guided the Blues to the last-16 as manager before being sacked in January 2021 with the team sitting ninth in the English Premier League.

His replacement Thomas Tuchel went on to win the London club’s second Champions League trophy just four months later, beating Manchester City 1-0 in the final.

Lampard was named as caretaker manager last week after the sacking of Graham Potter and is Chelsea’s fourth coach this season.

His first game back in the dugout was Saturday’s 1-0 defeat at Wolverhampton Wanderers which left the west London club 11th in the English Premier League and the Champions League is their only remaining chance of silverware this season.

Real Madrid also lost on the weekend - going down 3-2 at home to Villarreal in La Liga - but will welcome Chelsea to the Bernabeu in full confidence having beaten Premier League rivals Liverpool 6-2 on aggregate in the last round and their La Liga rivals Barcelona 4-0 at the Camp Nou in last week’s Copa del Rey semi-final second leg.
