Bubba Wallace Penalty for Retaliation at Clash Is NASCAR Showing More Severe Punishments in 2023

Bubba Wallace had a fast car in the Clash at the Coliseum last Sunday and was in contention late to battle for the win. That all ended when Austin Dillon spun out the No. 23 car with seven laps to go.

The 23XI Racing driver showed his displeasure and retaliated the next time the No. 3 drove by. Nothing was said on the broadcast, but two days later during its weekly penalty report, NASCAR announced Wallace had received a penalty for his actions of "reckless driving."

That decision by the sanctioning body set a precedent for the 2023 season and fans and drivers desperately hope that — no matter how severe the consequences might be — it's consistently followed.
