We built this clean 1969 Camaro for a customer a while ago, and today, the car is back here at the V8 Speed & Resto Shop getting ready for the cruising season with some springtime maintenance and fluid changes.

The customer wanted a classic appearing 69 Camaro that improved on a few of the weaknesses of the original, but didn’t deviate from the original style very much.

For example, the car has a mostly stock exterior appearance and is wearing a great modern Chevrolet color called carbon flash metallic. The car came from Arizona so it wasn’t very rusty, but we did perform some metal repairs in the quarter panels and a few small rust repairs here and there, but most of the sheet metal is original GM. Metal body work was done to straighten the car and make the panel gap fit precisely. It was not a complete rotisserie frame-off restoration, but a pretty complete strip, fix, and repaint. Evercoat fillers and Standox paint materials were used to make it arrow-straight and super slick.

Mechanically, the car is powered by a 350 in.³ small block Chevy wearing a set of AFR cylinder heads and a Weiand intake manifold. We gave the engine a freshen up with new bearings, ARP hardware, and gaskets, and did a full comp cams roller cam conversion on the car. It was topped off with a Holley Sniper EFI system for better drivability and reliability. We dig the Holley finned valve covers and air cleaner which provide a little retro style similar to the Z/28 valve covers of the day. You can watch a 6-part video series on the engine build on our website at www.v8speedshop.com. The 350 is hooked to a four-speed manual transmission and currently spins a set of 4.11 rear gears, so this car is great fun going to stop light to stop light.

At a glance, it appears to have an original interior, but everything is new, with most of the reproduction restoration parts like the weather-strip, door panels, and trim coming from Classic Industries. You’ll notice the upgraded Distinctive Industries seat covers on the SCAT Procar seats. These have a pattern similar to what you could get new in ‘69, but feature so side bolsters and reclining seat backs which are much more comfortable and supportive than the originals. We installed an Ididit tilt steering column and OER rosewood steering wheel, which you look through to see the Dakota Digital VHX gauges that deliver accuracy and a tuned up appearance. And speaking of tunes, we added a complete custom auto sound system in the car with a head unit that looks like a belongs, but provides modern features like Bluetooth connectivity and a subwoofer / amp combo that hides under the back deck. New American Autowire harnesses handle the juice, and a Vintage Air A/C system keeps everyone cool on the road.

It rolls on US Mag Rambler wheels wrapped in Toyo Proxes T1 sport tires, with SSBC disc brakes peeking through the spokes. All the suspension components are new.

The front spoiler, rear spoiler, cowl induction hood, and second gen Camaro side mirrors are timeless updates to give the car a sportier look. As it sits, the car has a couple seasons of cruising on it it’s holding up very well, and we were happy to build this one for customer who’s become a great friend of our shop.
