Chevrolet C3 Corvette LS Swap 6 Speed Manual Transmission Swap at V8 Speed and Resto Shop Part 4

This 1969 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible came to the V8 Speed and Resto Shop in need of some serious power, performance, and reliability upgrades. This C3 Corvette was powered by a non-original and well worn 350 cubic inch V8 backed by a Muncie 4 speed manual transmission. The goal was a Corvette LS Swap to add modern power to this C3 Corvette. A C3 Corvette LS Swap seems to be a simple job at first glance, but the more you investigate, you'll see that a C3 Corvette LS Swap isn't quite so simple.

In this episode, the V8 Speed and Resto Shop crew installs a custom fabricated air intake and K&N Filter to feed fresh air into the Chevrolet Performance Parts LS3 480 HP crate engine. The LS3 is managed by a Holley Dominator EFI system. The LS3 is finished off with a pair of Corvette engine covers.

Next, the team installs a set of Wilwood disc brakes designed for the C3 Corvette. C3 Corvettes have 4-wheel disc brakes installed from the factory, but Wilwood 6 piston calipers were installed up front, along with Wilwood 4-piston calipers on the rear of our 1969 Corvette. Wilwood Corvette brakes are direct bolt-ons for C3 Corvettes. The brake system is also upgraded with a Hydratech Hydroboost brake booster unit, which provides high clamping pressure to the Wilwood calipers. The Hydratech C3 Corvette brake booster install will improve the Corvette’s brakes substantially.

The next chapter is the 17” Corvette Rally Wheels from YearOne. These YearOne Corvette Rally Wheels are machined aluminum, but they are the correct backspace and offset for C3 Corvettes. These aluminum C3 Corvette wheels also clear the oversized Wilwood brakes.

A C3 Corvette Dakota Digital VHX gauge system is installed, which allows the Holley driver to see the same information that the Hollley Dominator sees from the LS3 engine while driving. Dakota Digital VHX gauges for C3 Corvettes bolt in place of the original gauges, but provide modern movements and network connectivity to provide speed, RPM, oil pressure, temperature, and a multi-function display to keep the driver informed at a glance.

The 1969 Corvette roadster is also fitted with an air conditioning system from Vintage Air. Vintage Air Gen IV systems are made to fit the C3 Corvette, and provide heat and A/C to keep the driver comfortable. Music is provided by a Custom Autosound USA-630 AM FM MP3 Bluetooth audio system. The Custom Autosound C3 Corvette radio does not require dash modifications for install.

The 480 HP Chevrolet Performance LS3 V8 uses Hooker cast iron header manifolds, and the V8 Speed and Resto Shop crew fabricated some stainless steel side pipes and mufflers using parts from Magnaflow Exhaust.

The Tremec 6-speed manual transmission from Modern Driveline is now installed. With the Tremec T56 transmission tunnel modifications, the team fabricated an aluminum center console cover piece designed to fit in the original mounting hole but modified to accept the T56 6-speed shifter in the C3 Corvette.

Once completed, the 1969 Corvette LS swap and T56 Magnum 6-speed manual transmission perform like a late model Corvette, while keeping the look of the original. It now has over 480 horsepower, six gears, improved Wilwood disc brakes, air conditioning and modern audio, and is as reliable as a new car! And the driveline is under warranty!
