China conducted a series of military drills near Taiwan over the weekend, drawing condemnation from Taipei and Washington. The exercises included the encirclement of Taiwan by Chinese military forces, which Beijing views as a breakaway province.

The drills began just hours after Taiwan's President Tsai Ing-wen returned from a trip to the United States, where she met with senior US officials and lawmakers. During her visit, President Tsai called for greater international support for Taiwan against what she described as China's "continued authoritarian expansionism."

In response to the drills, Taiwan's Defense Ministry reported that 71 Chinese military planes and nine ships crossed the Taiwan Strait median line, an unofficial dividing line between Chinese and Taiwanese territory. One of the Chinese ships even fired a round from its deck as it sailed near Pingtan island, China's closest point to Taiwan.

Fair use is the right to use a copyrighted work under certain conditions without permission of the copyright owner. The doctrine helps prevent a rigid application of copyright law that would stifle the very creativity the law is designed to foster. It allows one to use and build upon prior works in a manner that does not unfairly deprive prior copyright owners of the right to control and benefit from their works. Together with other features of copyright law like the idea/expression dichotomy discussed above, fair use reconciles the copyright statute with the First Amendment.
