We don’t determine what we deserve (Laboring in the vineyard Matthew 20:1-16)
We don’t determine what we deserve (Laboring in the vineyard Matthew 20:1-16)
If our employer’s left it up to us how much we got paid, then we would all be millionaires, we would pay ourselves top dollar per hour. This is not the way the job market works it is driven by supply and demand for workers in certain areas of the market. Right now, the coal market is booming, and it is hard to find good, qualified coal miners so every coal company is paying top dollar to ensure they get their orders filled. Next year the demand for coal may fall and as demand falls so does the demand for workers because fewer workers can fill the reduced orders, this drives wages down because you have more men competing for fewer jobs. Ultimately the workers are at the mercy of the market and what their employers are willing to pay at any given time. In this parable the labors who worked all day long was upset with the owner of the vineyard who paid those who worked only a few ours the same wage as them. The owner of the vineyard told them that they had no argument because he paid them exactly what they agreed to work for, and he had the right to do what he wanted with what belonged to him. If he wanted to pay everyone the same, it was his money and his vineyard, he could do what he wanted. In life we must realize that we are not working in our own field but instead in God’s field, and God determines the wages we receive.
Is it fair that those who worked longer got the same pay as those who worked only a few hours? Is it fair that I got saved as a child and served the Lord my entire life and the thief on the cross was only saved for a few minutes and He gets to go to the same Heaven as me? The answer is that we do not get to determine what is fair, the owner the Universe does. Psalm 24:1-2 says that the earth is the Lord’s and everything in it. God spoke this planet into existence, gave everything in its life, and sustains his creation daily. If God gave His creation what we all deserved, then we would all be doomed to an enter eternity separated from God in Hell. Our sins have brought about the destruction of God’s property in the form of a cursed earth, death, sickness, etc. The perfect creation of God was tainted when His creation decided to put their wants and desires above the Creator of all life. Despite our rebellion, God so loved His creation, that He made a way of escape from the punishment and judgment that we all deserved. He sent His only begotten Son, Jesus, to pay the price for our sins and offer hope of redemption. Life does not always seem fair in our eyes, and we fill like we deserve more than we have been handed but we must remember God is in control not us, He can do what He wants with what is His. God’s Kingdom is not a democracy, it is a theocracy where God is the sole power and authority.
